Government resume strategy - Use OPM's buzzwords

Career quick tip #2: Government resume strategy - Use OPM's buzzwords! Find the exact words HR managers are looking for in resumes.

We've talked about this before and I can't stress it enough, the first level of the application process is the computer review. They're looking for the buzz words in your materials that show you know what you're talking about and are qualified for the position. Getting the right words in your resume is key to both getting in and getting ahead in public service. After all, a hiring manager can't hire you if you never get onto their radar screen. But never fear - here's what you need to do.

OPM has position classification descriptions available for the public to see and use. Go to their website to find your series number and the related description. Next, select the verbiage and then use it to build your materials. Be sure to tailor your resume to demonstrate how your qualifications are relevant while keeping the buzz words. Refining the OPM text with your experiences will really help your resume shine.

Follow this strategy and your application will have an easier path to decision makers!

Remember, you have the qualifications for the job. Now you just need to demonstrate them in paper! A simple update here can do wonders for your career!
